What can a space traveler expect to find when forced to land in the middle of one of Earth’s zoos? Will the alien be of any help to the animals? Will the animals be of any help to the traveler? Families are invited to Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center, 150 E. Wood Street, in Palatine on March 26 to find out how each animal is special to a zoo in Family Friendly Theatre’s original science-fiction musical production, “Planet Zoo”.
“I wanted to write a story with music that would spark a child’s imagination,” said playwright and performer Sue Mrotek. “I figured they’d find animals and aliens appealing.” Growing up, Mrotek was involved in sports and got introduced to theater by her mother. After years of performing in the Chicagoland area, Mrotek says she started to write plays at a time when she could not find any productions with characters she wanted to audition for.
“Planet Zoo” is directed by Family Friendly Theatre Artistic Director Julie Price. “In this role, I always focus on the best way to capture the audience’s attention through character performances, choreography, audience interaction, and fun costumes,” said Price. “My goal is always for audience members to walk away smiling, talking about their favorite characters, and maybe humming one of the catchy songs Sue created.”
Palatine Park District’s Family Friendly Theatre program offers a convenient, local option for introducing children to the theatrical experience on days off school at Cutting Hall. These 60-minute performances are ideal for children in grades K-8. The Family Friendly Theatre troupe is also available to travel for performances in school theatres, cafeterias, or gymnasiums.
“Using music and comedy, ’Planet Zoo’ focuses on the importance of acceptance and kindness to all beings,” said Price. “A message we are all never too young or too old to learn and take to heart.”
The cast will present two performances at Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center on Monday, March 26 at 10:30am and 1:00pm. Tickets are $6.00 for ages three and up with a special discount of $5.00 per ticket for groups 10 or more. Children two years and under will be admitted for free. All attendees require a ticket, including toddlers and infants. “Planet Zoo” is supported by the 2018 Family Friendly Theatre presenting sponsor, Andigo Credit Union. Tickets are available to purchase online or by phone through the Cutting Hall Box Office at 847.202.5222.
