Through an intergovernmental agreement signed in 2016, Harper College and Palatine Park District have entered into a partnership to provide recreational programming in the newly renovated Health and Recreation Center located in Building M on the Harper College Campus.
The newly renovated indoor pool will offer lessons, lap swim, open swim, and a variety of aquatics programming. Additional recreational program options offered by the Park District will include fitness, dance, and sports.

Registration for all fall classes will open on Monday, July 23 for all participants. Please note, there are two different systems being used to register for Health and Recreation Center programs.
- Classes with a blue square (), including dance, sports, and fitness options, will be registered through the Harper College system.
- Classes with an orange circle (), such as aquatics, will be registered through the Palatine Park District system.
Now Hiring Part-Time Aquatics Positions
Palatine Park District is hiring lifeguards, swim instructors, and pool attendants for the Health and Recreation Center pool. Review the positions listed below and complete a job application online.
Responsibilities: The Health and Recreation Center Pool Lifeguard position is a year-round job with part-time hours; including, but not limited to: working during the school year and summer months. Lifeguards ensure the safety of our aquatic customers by scanning the pool, preventing accidents, enforcing the rules and appropriately responding to emergency situations. In addition, lifeguards assist in teaching swimming skills to customers of all ages. All employees must attend monthly in-service training sessions.
Qualifications: The minimum age for Lifeguards is 15 years of age. Applicants who are under 16 years of age, must provide a valid work permit by the first day of work. Current Certification in American Red Cross is required in order work as a lifeguard. Lifeguards must be able to meet a minimum 20/30 uncorrected or best-corrected binocular vision. The ideal candidate will be mature, responsible and have a great attitude. The candidate should enjoy working with people and have the ability to effectively communicate with children and adults.
Responsibilities: Locker Room Attendant is responsible for supervising the locker room area, escorting students through the locker room area, keeping the pool deck organized and clean, assisting with organizing lesson materials, familiarizing self with pool information and Park District policies and procedures, assisting with First Aid as necessary, prepared to respond to emergency situations, and other duties as assigned by the Pool Manager.
Qualifications: Customer service experience is preferred. A successful criminal background check, pre-employment physical and drug screen is required prior to hire.
Responsibilities:Masters Swim Coach & Instructor will instruct Masters swim practices three times a week, create a swimming workout for all practice sessions, help swimmers develop individual goals, assist in developing a new program, supervise Masters Swimming participants, and other duties as assigned by the Aquatics Coordinator.
Qualifications: Minimum one (1) year of experience in coaching competitive swimmers or comparable experience. Preferred experience working with and coaching adults, and triathlon or distance swimming. Must attain valid Lifeguards and Adult & Child CPR/AED certification within six (6) months of employment. Must have ability to effectively communicate goals and progressions to swimmers. Ability to work with the entire aquatic staff to build a strong program. Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills and be comfortable working with high level swimmers, triathletes, and non-competitive swimmers new to a master’s workout program. A High School diploma, or GED and competitive swim experience is required. USA or USMS Coaching certifications preferred (or ability to obtain). Membership in USMS preferred (or ability to obtain). A successful criminal background check, pre-employment physical and drug screen is required.
Responsibilities: The Health and Recreation Center Pool Swim Instructor position is a year-round job with part-time hours; including, but not limited to: working during the school year and summer months. Instructor will promote the concepts of water safety and swimming through a positive approach to each class and student.
Qualifications: The minimum age for a Swim Instructor is 15 years of age. Applicants, who are under 16 years of age, must provide a valid work permit by the first day of work. Knowledge of the fundamentals of strokes, skills, progressions, and the assigned responsibilities of each swim level. Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred, but not required. Swimming Knowledge background is preferred. The ideal candidate will be mature, responsible and have a great attitude. The candidate should enjoy working with people and have the ability to effectively communicate with children and adults.
