Palatine Park District is proud to offer a wide variety of martial arts classes for participants of all ages. One of the long-standing providers of these programs is J.P. Wood Martial Arts, located at 249 E. Northwest Highway in Palatine. With decades of experience and a strong community presence, J.P. Wood Martial Arts continues to help students build confidence, strength, and lifelong skills.
We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Jan Wood, of J.P. Wood Martial Arts, to learn more about her background, the benefits of martial arts, and what makes their programs unique.
The Benefits Go Far Beyond Fitness
According to Wood, the benefits of martial arts are extensive. Physically, students develop strength, speed, flexibility, balance, endurance, and coordination. Just as important are the real-life self-defense skills that help students protect themselves and their loved ones.
The mental benefits are equally impactful. Martial arts instill self-confidence—something Wood believes is essential, noting that “if you believe in yourself, the sky is the limit.” Students also learn self-control, courtesy, respect, perseverance, focus, integrity, and what the school refers to as an “indomitable spirit.”
A Lifelong Activity for All Ages
Martial arts truly is a lifelong pursuit. Students can begin as early as three years old and continue training well into adulthood. With so many facets to the art, students are continually challenged and engaged, even years after starting. Many instructors at J.P. Wood Martial Arts have been with the school for a minimum of five years, with some teaching for over 25 years.
“Another unique aspect of martial arts is that people of all ages and genders can train together—something rare in today’s highly specialized sports environment,” Wood said.
Balancing Martial Arts with Other Activities
Parents often wonder if martial arts requires full commitment. Wood explained that most students participate in other sports or activities throughout the year, such as dance, gymnastics, band, choir, or foreign language studies. J.P. Wood Martial Arts offers a flexible schedule designed to accommodate the busy lives of today’s families.
Girls and Boys in Martial Arts
In the younger age groups, the ratio of girls to boys is fairly equal. As students get older, the number of boys increases, but many girls remain actively involved and continue to thrive in the program.
Understanding the Different Classes
J.P. Wood Martial Arts offers several distinct programs:
While Tae Kwon Do and Karate share similarities—such as forms, basics, sparring, and self-defense—the differences often come down to technique emphasis, instructional approach, and the experience of the instructors.
